ARTIST BERANDA RESIDENCY PROGRAMS









Beranda Residensi Langkawi  is calling for artists to express interest in conducting a 3 days to 30 days residency programme for 2011.
Langkawi Island near to Mahsuri Tomb with a population of approximately 90,000. Covering an area of
47,848 square kilometres and located north of Malaysia.

SCOPE OF WORK
During the residency the artist is required to work on the theme of ‘A day in the life of the Mahsuri Village, a theme that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The artist is expected to design their residency to anticipate the following outcomes:
·         Engagement by the artist with a significant variety of beranda community members. This would include the artist making him or herself available for community interaction through such activities as open studio sessions, talks, workshops and artistic collaborations.
·         The creation of a tangible artistic product e.g. a performance, exhibition, a piece of writing or art object/s. The theme of the work is to be based on the concept of ‘A day in the life of the Beranda Residensi Langkawi’.
·         If appropriate, the artist is to adopt the role of mentor towards younger artists in Residency.
·         A portion of the work made during the residency is to become the property of the Village.
2. RESPONSIBLILITIES OF THE ARTIST
·         Design a programme for the residency that reflects the list of anticipated outcomes outlined in the SCOPE OF WORK.
·         Liaise with the village & City regarding the contact and engagement with Beranda’ Residensi’s  community.
·         The artist is to make him or herself available for publicity during the period of the residency. The artist is not to contact or engage in any discourse with the media without prior approval of Manager of Community Development.
·         Maintains a close working relationship with the Residency  Officer throughout the residency.
·         Liaises with the Arts Officer regarding accommodation, studio and exhibition/performance spaces.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BERANDA RESIDENCY LANGKAWI
·         Help with the arrangement of accommodation, studio and exhibition/performance spaces.
·         Payment of the artist.
·         Liaise with community groups within brl who may be interested in the artist’s residency.
·         Organized  publicity regarding the residency and resulting work.
4. FEE
The Beranda Residency has a no allocation to pay the artist. The has be make a payment to Beranda Residensi  to cover the artist’s fees and all of the artist’s expenses including travel, accommodation, studio, materials, exhibition costs and food.

5. TIME FRAME
The time frame for this project includes the following critical dates:

Submission Requirements
Applicants are required to submit their proposal on A4 paper as well as in CD format:
·         A letter identifying the artist’s interest in the project and discussing the approach they would take. The letter should include the kind of work that they intend to produce as well as the sectors of the community they feel could benefit from the residency. A draft budget also needs to be included.
·         Curriculum vitae.
·         Up to ten images of previous relevant artwork with a list detailing the images including title, date of work, medium (images need only be presented in CD format).
·         Any additional information which the applicant considers relevant.
